What Medical Dramas Teach About Pregnancy, Birth, & Informed Decisions
I have a confession.
For years, I’ve been a devoted fan of medical dramas. We’re talking deep commitment here. ER, Chicago Hope, Grey's Anatomy, and of course, Call the Midwife. And that’s not to mention the countless hours of A Baby Story and miscellaneous surgeries I watched on The Learning Channel back in the day. I was such an odd child!
And lately? I’ve added The Pitt to the rotation and I am hooked.
But here’s the thing I’ve realized over time:
I don’t just watch these shows.
I study them.
Wait… Are We Calling TV “Education” Now?
Let’s be clear: I’m not confusing a binge-watch session with hands-on clinical experience.
No one is walking into a hospital like, “Don’t worry, I’ve seen 12 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy.”
But I am saying this:
There’s something valuable happening when you watch with curiosity instead of just for entertainment.
Because I’m not passively watching.
I’m pausing.
I’m Googling.
I’m asking questions.
And if you’re pregnant (or planning to be), that instinct right there? That’s gold.
Curiosity Is Where It Starts
One of the things I love most about shows like The Pitt is how often I find myself going:
“Wait… what is that?”
“Is that standard?”
“Do people really do it that way?”
And suddenly I’m down a rabbit hole learning about procedures, terminology, and how decisions get made in high-pressure situations.
Not because I think the show is 100% accurate.
But because it sparks curiosity.
And curiosity is often the very first step toward feeling more grounded in your own experience—especially when it comes to birth.
Watching With a Birth Lens
I can’t turn off the part of my brain that filters everything through birth work.
So even when I’m watching a general medical drama, I’m noticing things like:
How providers communicate under pressure
Whether options are clearly explained (or glossed over)
The tone used when asking for consent
The dynamic between the person receiving care and the people providing it
If you’re pregnant, these are the same kinds of things that directly impact your experience.
Not just what happens—but how it feels.
And sometimes, watching these shows helps you start to notice things you didn’t realize were worth paying attention to.
A Gentle Reality Check (Because, TV)
Of course, medical dramas are… dramatic.
Things move fast. Decisions are made quickly. Outcomes are often extreme.
And real life? It’s usually a lot less cinematic and a lot more nuanced.
So no—watching these shows doesn’t prepare you for birth in a practical, step-by-step way.
But it can help you start asking better questions.
And if you’re thinking, “Okay… but I’d really like to know what’s actually relevant for birth,” this is exactly the kind of thing I walk through inside my online course, Your Birth, Your Options. We take all those “wait, can they do that?” questions and turn them into real, applicable understanding you can use in your own care.
Why This Matters More Than You’d Think
So many people go into labor without realizing how many decisions might come their way.
They don’t always know:
What’s routine vs. optional
What alternatives might exist
Or that they’re allowed to pause and ask questions in the first place
And while a TV show isn’t going to teach you all of that…
It can spark the moment when you start wondering.
“Wait… do I have a say in this?”
That moment matters.
Because once you start asking questions, everything begins to shift.
From Watching to Preparing
If you’ve ever found yourself pausing a show to Google something, or texting a friend like, “Is this normal??”—you’re already doing something important.
You’re engaging.
You’re thinking critically.
You’re not just taking things at face value.
Now imagine bringing that same energy into your prenatal appointments or your birth planning.
That’s where the real shift happens.
And if you want support practicing that—whether it’s learning how to ask questions, understanding your options, or having someone in your corner during labor—that’s exactly where working with a doula can make a difference.
Final Thoughts From Your Friendly Neighborhood Medical Drama Enthusiast
I’ll always love a good medical drama.
The fast pace.
The emotional intensity.
The occasional wildly unrealistic storyline.
But I also love what happens when I watch with curiosity instead of just consuming what’s in front of me.
Because even in fictional storylines, there are glimpses of something real:
People navigating uncertainty.
Making decisions under pressure.
Wanting to feel seen, heard, and respected.
And if you’re pregnant, you deserve that too.
