Transformed by Birth: A Book Review

When you’re expecting a child, especially your first child, you are inundated with more information and tons of unsolicited advice about just how to go through pregnancy, labor, and childbirth. It’s a time in life when people feel like they can freely comment on your body - and touch it - and chime in about what is undoubtedly one of the biggest life transformations ever and these invasions of self come from loved ones, strangers, social media, and everyone in between. To say the least, it is a LOT.

With her book Transformed by Birth, Dr. Britta Bushnell has cultivated an intelligent, emotional, and enlightening pregnancy and childbirth guide… one I wish I had when I was becoming a parent.

Birth is a rite of passage unlike any other. American culture has not prepared us adequately (and it drives me wild), but this book is a good place to start. Take your time with this one, allow the words and concepts to soak into your bones and take root. If each pregnant person today read this book and passed it to each pregnant person they knew and passed it down to the next generation, the world would ignite with power and purpose! Let go of the need for control and structure as you grow new life

Childbirth is more than just having a baby. The quote below is taken directly from Dr. Bushnell’s site, she says it best (duh).

Childbirth is more than just having a baby. Transformed by Birth invites you to discover childbirth as a transformational experience that alters your knowing of who you are and lasts long after pregnancy and birth are over.

Our culture has inundated us with limiting ideals that prevent us from fully engaging in the journey of pregnancy and childbirth—including a need for control and certainty, vilification of pain, and reverence for technology and intellectual knowledge, among others.

Transformed by Birth helps you clear away unwanted beliefs and behaviors so you can open to the meaning and power of this uniquely life-changing experience. It offers daily practices, rituals, exercises, and more to help you cultivate resilience, power, and connection during this transformative time.
