Frequently Asked Questions

What is a doula?

I’m a trained and certified professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and shortly after childbirth to help you achieve the most satisfying experience possible.

Does a doula take the place of my partner or chosen support person?

No way! While the birthing person is always my top priority, I’m a doula for your support person(s) too. I support you, however, you need it.

Isn't a midwife the same thing as a doula?

Nope! Midwives provide medical care for you during pregnancy, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. Doulas provide you with emotional, informational, and physical support during pregnancy, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. Think of it like this: midwives on the inside (of your body), doulas on the outside!

Oh, so you do home births?

I sure do attend home births! I support clients for hospital births as well. Birth is birth, I’ll go wherever you go!

Do doulas support epidural and/or cesarean deliveries?

This one does! I’m a doula without an agenda. I’m not trying to convince you to go through labor and delivery a certain kind of way. I work with you to figure out what your preferences are in hopes that your actual experience is as close to that as possible.

When should I hire a doula?

My suggestion though is to hire one by 20 weeks along if you can so you have as much time to form a bond throughout the duration of your pregnancy as possible. I’ve had clients hire me days after getting a positive pregnancy test and I’ve had others hire me in their third trimester. If we’re a good fit, I’ll likely take you as a client however far along in your pregnancy you might be.

Do you take insurance?

I do not take insurance. However, if you have an FSA/HSA account, you can usually use those funds to pay for my services. If finances are a concern for you, ask friends and family to chip in on doula support rather than buying things from a baby registry. Click here to contact me about gift card options!

How often would I see you if you were my doula?

We’d meet for at least two prenatal visits, lasting for an hour or so each, depending on the level of support that you purchase. You’ll also have access to me via phone calls, texts, and emails. I’m a very in-touch doula and view each interaction as a chance for us to continue getting to know each other as well as a chance for you to build your trust in me.

Do you work with a backup doula?

Sure do! You can read about them here. When a client decides they want to work with me, I send a message to my backups and see who’s available around the estimated due date. At least one of my prenatal visits with you would include the backup and you could be in touch with her as often as you’d like.
